Holiday travel peaks on Christmas Eve as Florida Highway Patrol urges safety

  • December 25, 2025

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – Traffic is hitting its peak on Christmas Eve as families travel to spend Christmas with loved ones, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

With more drivers on the road, including many from out of state, crashes tend to increase during this time, according to troopers.

Sergeant Ryan Brown with the Florida Highway Patrol said the biggest mistake drivers make is rushing.

“The biggest mistake is some of them are in a rush and leave in a hurry, so we also urge visitors and motorists to make sure they leave and plan when they will leave and head to their destination so that they will be as safe as possible when traveling,” Brown said.

Drivers are urged to inspect their vehicles thoroughly before hitting the road, including checking the tires, brakes, lights, and windshield wipers. Troopers also recommend driving slowly if weather conditions worsen.

FHP said impaired driving remains one of the biggest dangers on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Troopers are reminding drivers to never get behind the wheel after drinking.

“We’ve always urged people, if you are going to have a drink, always have a designated driver, always have a ride share, taxi, uber whatever it may be to get them home safely,” Brown said.

Law enforcement said traffic will remain heavy over the next couple of days. Drivers are urged to plan ahead, leave early, and make sure their vehicles are ready for the road.

Troopers tell us they will also be increasing patrols through Christmas to help keep drivers safe. Their message this Christmas Eve is slow down, buckle up, and make it home safely.
