TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A former Tallahassee man was sentenced to three years of supervised release for his part in a nationwide tech support fraud scheme, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
John Kuhlmann, 79, was also ordered to pay over a million dollars in restitution.
Court records show that starting in November 2018, Kuhlmann opened two corporations in Florida which were said to provide computer tech services. Neither business was registered as a money transmitting service, but Kuhlmann had opened the businesses to get money from elderly victims.
According to court documents, Kulhmann would then wire the funds to his co-conspirators who were located in foreign countries.

The co-conspirators, court records show, would use a variety of tactics on these elderly victims, including convincing them their computers had been infected with viruses, been hacked, or financial information was at risk.
The victims were convinced to pay as much as $150,000 for computer repair services. Kuhlmann transferred around $3.5 million dollars in victim funds.
Kuhlmann, who now lives in Daytona Beach, did not receive any jail time for his involvement in the fraud scheme that impacted more than 300 elderly victims.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office encourages those 60 and older or those who know someone over 60 who has experienced financial fraud to reach out to the National Elder Fraud Hotline at 1-833-FRAUD-11 (1-833-372-8311).
