Animal Advocate: How to help pets get through NYE fireworks
BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Caroline Crane said the Humane Society of Broward County is going to receive many dogs and cats after the New Year’s Eve fireworks.
Every year, beloved pets run away from home in a panic. The noisy celebration is unexpected.
“Dogs and cats hear at higher decibels than we do and higher frequencies, so if it’s loud for you, it’s 20 times louder for them, so it’s terrifying,” Crane said.
Pet owners can prevent the mishap and be prepared if it happens. Here are some tips:
Make sure your pets have their collars with their tagsMake sure the pets’ microchips are up to dateKeep current photos of the pet’s face, body, and collar Swaddle them up like a baby or use a really tight T-shirt to help them feel very comfortable when they’re scared.Use calming aids like doggy or kitty Xanax prescribed by your veterinarianMake a safe and secure space inside the home, so they can’t escape. If you leave your pets, place them in a quiet room without windowsUse a small speaker to play calming music
