The Citrus Bowl game is marking its 80th anniversary this year
The matchup follows the Pop-Tarts Bowl earlier this week, and Orlando’s two big bowl games are heating up Central Florida’s economy.
Organizers say the two games could pump up to $80 million into the local economy.
Taco Kat general manager Timothy Morales is one of hundreds of vendors and business owners gearing up for thousands of visitors.
“We’ve been working for it throughout the year to make it happen at the end of the year, so it’s going to be a good night,” he said. “We’ve been looking into the game days, etcetera, to see where we can, what we can do to bring them over here after the game.”
Florida Citrus Sports hosts both bowl games. Florida Citrus Sports CEO Steve Hogan says each bowl game could generate $35 to $40 million this week to support local businesses.
Hogan says visitors support the theme parks and smaller businesses.
“Little ones up and down I-Drive. They’re going in to eat at restaurants, obviously. They’re popping into the gas station and filling up and buying merchandise,” he said.
Hogan explained that all the events hosted at Camping World Stadium bring a powerful boost to businesses nearby.
“There’s some small vendors right now. I know Legacy Café at Ollie’s vends here in the stadium on game days. People volunteer and work. They grab shifts here,” he said.
Hogan adds that the two bowl games combined with the Florida Classic pump $100 million into Central Florida’s economy each year.
The Cheez-It Citrus Bowl will kick off at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, and the game marks its 80th anniversary this year.
Orlando also hosted the Staff DNA Cure Bowl at Camping World Stadium on Dec. 17. It’s another event that pumped money into our local economy.
