MIAMI — Police have arrested a man accused of stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of copper wiring and construction tools from a secured storage trailer at the Miami VA Hospital late last year.

According to a Miami Police Department arrest report, the burglary occurred on the night of Nov. 5, 2025, at the VA Hospital located at 1201 NW 16th St.

The reporting party told detectives that an industrial storage trailer in the hospital’s parking lot had been secured around 6 p.m. at the end of the workday. When workers returned the following morning, they discovered the trailer’s lock had been cut and the door left partially open.

An inventory revealed that pallets of copper wiring and various construction tools — with an estimated total value of approximately $100,000 — were missing, the arrest report stated.

According to the report, security video obtained from the Veterans Affairs Police Department showed a white Ford Econoline van pulling up to the trailer around 10:03 p.m. on Nov. 5.

Police said the footage shows a suspect wearing a neon vest exiting the vehicle and cutting the lock on the trailer. A second individual then joined in loading items into the van before both suspects fled the area around 10:24 p.m. Investigators also noted the van had significant damage to its right-side passenger door.

According to the arrest report, on Nov. 12, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Northside District deputies conducted a traffic stop on a white Ford Econoline matching the description.

Police said two men inside the van fled on foot, but deputies apprehended the driver, later identified as Kurt Williams, 30, of Miami. Records revealed the van had been reported stolen out of Fort Lauderdale. The passenger escaped and remains at large, authorities said.

A search warrant executed on Nov. 19 led detectives to recover construction tools and neon safety vests from the van, consistent with items seen in the surveillance footage. Investigators said the damage to the vehicle also matched the van captured on video during the burglary.

Williams, who police say has a prior criminal history involving theft, was formally arrested by Miami-Dade deputies on Dec. 27, 2025, in connection with the case.

Williams faces charges of burglary of an unoccupied structure and second-degree grand theft.

As of Thursday afternoon, he remained held at the Metrowest Detention Center.

Anyone with information about the second suspect is urged to contact the Miami Police Department or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
