In mid-December, Troy Aikman criticized the Miami Dolphins on “Monday Night Football” for their seemingly confused, lackluster approach during a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers that eliminated them from playoff contention.
Now, the Hall of Fame quarterback is going to help the Dolphins find a general manager.
The MNF analyst and three-time Super Bowl champion will serve as a consultant with the Dolphins and sit in on GM interviews as they conduct their search to replace Chris Grier, the team confirmed to The Athletic on Thursday. Grier and the Dolphins agreed to part ways Oct. 31, 2025, a day after the Baltimore Ravens routed Miami 28-6 at home.
The Dolphins wanted a voice from outside their organization with connections across the NFL to weigh in on the hire, a source confirmed.
Aikman will continue with his MNF duties while consulting the Dolphins. Aikman and Joe Buck will be announcing Saturday’s Seattle Seahawks-San Francisco 49ers game, which will decide the NFC West division winner and the No. 1 NFC seed for the playoffs.
Champ Kelly, who joined Miami as senior personnel executive, has been the interim GM since Grier and the team parted ways. Grier had been GM since 2016, overseeing five winning seasons and three playoff appearances, but the team lost the trio of postseason games. The Dolphins haven’t won a playoff game since 2000, when they beat the Indianapolis Colts. Miami has the league’s longest playoff win drought.
Aikman retired after the 2000 season and began his broadcasting career in 2001, analyzing games at Fox alongside Buck, a play-by-play announcer. The two then began broadcasting MNF games in the 2022 season. Buck and Aikman are now in their 24th year as a tandem, the longest announcer pairing in NFL history.
In his 12-year Cowboys career, Aikman won Super Bowls against the Buffalo Bills in 1993 and 1994 and then against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1996. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008 for his tenure at UCLA and Oklahoma.
Aikman has never been in NFL ownership or part of an executive team. However, he and former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach became co-owners of Hall of Fame Racing, a now-defunct NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team. Aikman was once part owner of the San Diego Padres.
In a Dec. 15 MNF game, Aikman repeatedly criticized the Dolphins for how they handled their game against the Steelers, a 28-15 defeat. Despite trailing by only two scores, Aikman suggested that Miami did not seem in any hurry to score and didn’t call timeouts when it should have, and then called them when they seemingly didn’t make sense.
Troy Aikman: “I’m flabbergasted by what we’ve witnessed here in this fourth quarter with the Dolphins. And now they want to call timeouts. It just is about as ridiculous a fourth quarter as I’ve seen in a long time.” 🏈🎙️#NFL #MNF https://t.co/UCAKUYXR97 pic.twitter.com/YDYIdhYtgk
