Let me begin by saying this clearly: I am a strong supporter of our local newspaper.

Local journalism is critical to an informed public, a healthy democracy and a connected community. Our newspapers should be a mirror of our community — reflecting both our challenges and our successes.

Unfortunately, I have grown increasingly disappointed by the way Broward County Public Schools is portrayed.

I recognize the very real financial pressures facing the newspaper industry, but those pressures should not result in an overreliance on sensationalized headlines that focus on conflict while often overlooking what matters most — the academic progress and success of our students.

The truth is this: Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is succeeding in its core mission — educating children.

Our district has earned back-to-back “A” ratings from the state of Florida. More importantly, we have eliminated D and F schools districtwide — a first in our history. These are not small accomplishments. They represent the hard work, talent and dedication of tens of thousands of educators and staff, and the resilience and determination of nearly 200,000 students.

Beyond these historic academic gains, BCPS is also leading the way in innovation. We offer hundreds of magnet and choice programs aligned to student interests and real workforce needs. We are scaling artificial intelligence across our entire organization through Microsoft Copilot 365, enhancing instruction, operations and efficiency.

We are expanding the use of virtual reality and extended reality into all middle school math and science classrooms, giving students immersive, real-world learning experiences that deepen understanding and engagement. Our robust workforce innovation programs, industry certifications and career pathways, ensure that graduates leave BCPS prepared for college, careers and life.

Yet, these achievements are rarely reflected in the coverage of our school district.

Instead, a narrow focus on controversy dominates the narrative. And while some may thrive in chaos, our students and our community do not. They have paid the price of the status quo for far too long.

I refuse to accept that status quo.

I fully acknowledge that there is more work to be done at BCPS, and I am committed to leading that work with full transparency, accountability and a relentless determination to do what’s best for our students.

Our schools are succeeding. Our students are achieving. Our educators are innovating. And our families deserve to know that their public school system is moving in the right direction.

I extend an open invitation to our local newspaper and its editorial board: Come visit our schools. Walk our campuses. Talk with our teachers and students. See firsthand the excellence, innovation and progress taking place across Broward County.

Our story is bigger than headlines. And it is a story worth telling.
