FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (CBS12) — The search continues for the suspect who shot and killed a 17-year-old boy with NFL dreams near Fort Lauderdale’s beach on New Year’s Eve.

Josh Gipson Jr., described by friends and family as “compassionate, kind-hearted, and family-oriented,” was found with a gunshot wound around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at 17 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., Fort Lauderdale Police Sgt. Patrick O’Brien told the South-Florida Sun Sentinel.

Police say Josh was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center as a trauma alert, but later succumbed to his injuries.

An online fundraiser for Josh, made by his family, said he had aspirations of playing in the NFL.

“The shock and pain of losing Joshua in such a sudden and senseless way has left his family and friends heartbroken,” the fundraiser said.

While the case is still unsolved, Sgt. O’Brien said detectives believe the shooting was isolated.
