Multiple cars damaged in parking garage fire

  • January 6, 2026

TAMPA, Fla. (WWSB) – A fire damaged at least 10 cars inside a parking garage at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

At 12:50 p.m on Jan. 5, Fire crews were dispatched to reports of a vehicle fire on the second floor of the hotel’s parking garage at 2900 Bayport Drive. While en route, firefighters observed a large column of black smoke and upgraded the alarm to a working fire.

Fire engines arrived to find multiple vehicles fully engulfed in flames, with the fire rapidly spreading across the second floor of the garage. Crews initially attempted an interior attack on the fire but were forced to withdraw due to deteriorating conditions and safety concerns.

Firefighters then transitioned to a defensive strategy, requesting additional units and using standpipe operations and an aerial ladder to contain the fire.

The fire was confined to the floor of origin and brought under control within about 60 minutes, officials said. The blaze did not spread to the hotel, and an evacuation was not required.

In total, 10 vehicles sustained significant damage, while several others suffered cosmetic damage. A structural engineer was called to assess the integrity of the parking garage.

No injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
