Originally born in Croatia in 1947, Marija Sabanovic leaves behind two daughters, two sisters, a brother and multiple grandchildren.
LARGO, Fla. — A 78-year-old Pinellas County woman is being remembered as a “beloved grandmother” after she passed away weeks after her Largo townhouse caught fire.
Largo Fire Rescue responded around 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 9 to the fire on South Pines Drive.Â
A spokesperson for the agency said two people were transported to the hospital, one of them later identified as Marija Sabanovic.
The woman who called 911 at the time told 10 Tampa Bay News that she ran out into the street to flag down a neighbor to alert her about the fire. The neighbor, she said, actually entered the home and pulled Sabanovic out.
The family confirmed that Sabanovic suffered second- and third-degree burns and was sent to the hospital for treatment.
In an obituary, Sabanovic’s family confirmed she passed away on New Year’s Day at Tampa General Hospital.
Prior to Sabanovic’s passing, her family started a GoFundMe to help with medical bills and the cost of the townhome that was lost, which has currently raised more than $23,739.
“We had an unfortunate tragedy that occurred with the loss of our aunt’s home,” the GoFundMe states. “Our beloved grandmother was still in the house when it took ablaze and was thankfully pulled out by a neighbor.”
Originally born in Croatia in 1947, Sabanovic leaves behind two daughters, two sisters, a brother and multiple grandchildren.
“Marija loved and adored her grandkids, great-grandchildren and her 2 daughters,” the obituary reads. “She will be missed.”
A memorial is being held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the Moss Feaster Funeral Home and Cremation in Clearwater.
