Although several top European nations did not travel this week, and visa issues prevented Ethiopian runners from attending the championships, organizers are anticipating an exciting weekend.

“The local organizing committee has really set some extraordinary standards here,” said World Athletics President Sebastian Coe during Friday’s press conference at Apalachee Regional Park. “Thank you to our local dignitaries and thank you to Tallahassee for being such gracious hosts.

“Cross country is one of the core pillars of our sport. I joined the World Athletics Council in 2003 and from that moment, I’ve been pushing the cause of cross country. It’s an inseparable part of the journey that distance and endurance athletes make.”

World champion Jimmy Gressier of France, five-time U.S. national champion Weini Kelati Frezghi, and Australia’s Olympic and world 1500m medalist Jessica Hull were among the athletes who spoke during Friday’s press conference.
