Receivers coach Billy Gonzales was named interim by athletic director, Scott Stricklin, for the Gators’ remaining five games.

Top Florida football coach candidates

One name the staff has identified as a potential target on the Florida football coaching hot board is Washington head coach Jedd Fisch. A graduate of Florida in 1998, Fisch spent two years on the Gators staff as a graduate assistant under Steve Spurrier in 1999 and 2000. He’s since embarked on a coaching career evenly split in both college and the NFL — spending 13 years in each with various stops and positions along the way.

He’s spent the last five years out West as a head coach with Arizona (2021-23) and now Washington (2024-present). He’s hailed for his quick turnarounds as the Wildcats were winless in 2020 before Fisch’s arrival, won just one game in his first year with Arizona but went 10-3 in 2023, winning a bowl game and finishing 11th in the final AP Poll.
