GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) -North Central Florida will host several events this week to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with activities beginning Tuesday and continuing through Saturday.
The “Remembering Martin and Coretta” program will kick off the celebrations Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Dayspring Baptist Church. The free event will feature special tributes from various sororities and fraternities.
“Next week we’re starting with our activity sponsored by the Alphas and the AKA’s. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King were both part of those organizations, so they are sponsoring what we call ‘Remembering Martin and Coretta,’” said Rodney Long, founder of the MLK Commission.
On Wednesday at 7 p.m., the MLK Commission of Florida, Incorporated will sponsor a Town Hall Symposium at Dayspring Baptist Church. The panel discussion will feature alumni and current recipients of the Edna M. Hart Keeper of The Dream Scholarship Award.
The Annual Stephan P. Mickle Jazz Concert will take place Friday at 7 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center. Admission is free.
The MLK Commission will present the theatrical play “Me, Myself & God” Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center. The event offers free admission.
