TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida A&M women’s basketball enters a pivotal stretch of Southwestern Athletic Conference play with confidence in its identity and belief in the progress being made on both ends of the floor as the Rattlers hit the road for contests at Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Florida A&M opens the trip Thursday at 8 p.m. (ET) at Mississippi Valley State on SWAC TV, followed by a Saturday afternoon matchup at Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 4 p.m. (ET) on the UAPB Athletics website.
While the Rattlers continue to chase consistency in the win column, the underlying metrics show a team that competes with physicality, defends with effort, and consistently puts pressure on opponents through rebounding and free throw production – two areas that often dictate outcomes in SWAC play.
Establishing a Physical Identity
Florida A&M has leaned heavily into its interior presence and toughness. The Rattlers rank fourth in the SWAC in offensive rebounds (13.6 per game) and fourth in total rebounds (37.2), generating valuable second-chance opportunities and controlling tempo against conference opponents. That physical approach is complemented by Florida A&M’s ability to get downhill and draw fouls, ranking fourth in the league in free throw attempts per game (19.57) and third in free throws made (13.29).
At the line, Tahnyjia Purifoy has emerged as one of the most reliable shooters in the conference, ranking second in the SWAC in free throw percentage (81.0%). Her composure late in possessions has allowed Florida A&M to stay connected in tight games and convert pressure moments into points.
Defensive Presence in the Paint
Defensively, Florida A&M’s interior has been anchored by Breazia Robinson, who ranks second in the SWAC in blocks per game. Her rim protection has altered shot selection and allowed the Rattlers to stay aggressive on the perimeter, knowing they have a back-line defender capable of erasing mistakes.
That defensive activity has translated into disruptive stretches, particularly when Florida A&M is able to force opponents into contested shots and extended possessions. While the Rattlers continue to work toward greater efficiency, their effort level and defensive engagement have remained constant — a key sign of growth as the season progresses.
Offensive Development and Shot Creation
Offensively, Florida A&M has focused on ball movement, attacking the paint, and creating scoring chances through hustle plays. The Rattlers continue to emphasize inside-out offense, using offensive rebounds and dribble penetration to collapse defenses and generate open looks.
Florida A&M’s scoring has often come by committee, with multiple players contributing across the box score. That balance has allowed the Rattlers to weather scoring droughts and remain competitive deep into games, particularly when combined with their ability to score at the free throw line.
At Mississippi Valley State
Thursday | 8 PM ET | SWAC TV
Mississippi Valley State presents a significant interior challenge, leading the SWAC in blocks per game behind conference leader Nairobi Lewis. Florida A&M’s approach will center on physical post play, patience in the half court, and continuing to draw fouls — an area where the Rattlers have consistently found success.
Defensively, Florida A&M will look to limit second-chance points, protect the rim, and force Mississippi Valley State into contested perimeter shots. Controlling the glass and maintaining defensive discipline will be critical in neutralizing Valley’s strengths.
At Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Saturday | 4 PM ET | UAPB Athletics Website
Arkansas-Pine Bluff offers a different challenge, featuring balanced rebounding and active perimeter defense. Florida A&M’s ability to control tempo, protect the basketball, and convert from the free throw line will be key in this matchup.
The Rattlers will aim to impose their physical style early, using rebounding and interior scoring to wear down the Golden Lions while staying locked in defensively against dribble penetration.
The Bigger Picture
As conference play intensifies, Florida A&M continues to build toward its best basketball. The Rattlers’ commitment to rebounding, defensive effort, and attacking the basket reflects a team laying a foundation for sustained success.
This road swing provides an opportunity for Florida A&M to turn competitive stretches into complete performances – and to be rewarded for the toughness and resilience that have defined the Rattlers throughout the season.
