TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Capital Area Healthy Start Coalition (CAHSC) is expanding to serve more families navigating pregnancy and childbirth.
The organization is now settled into a new 10,000-square-foot location on Apalachee Parkway, and it now includes a community room to host education and training classes for parents.
Executive Director Chris Szorcsik said they work to help pregnant mothers, soon-to-be fathers, and their families for free. “Making sure she has access to childbirth education classes, breastfeeding support, transportation, housing,” Szorcsik said.
Healthy Start continues to support families until the child is three years old. “Those first three years of life are very critical to not only kindergarten readiness, but then our third-grade reading rates, our graduation rates, our workforce development,” Szorcsik said. “So starting off early, making sure a family has all of their support, is so critical.”

Larreka Hayes is a mother of three, but it wasn’t until her most recent pregnancy that she learned of Healthy Start. She said the support during pregnancy and after delivery has been life-changing.
“They didn’t leave my side not one time,” Hayes said. “I wish I would’ve known that with my other two kids. I wish I would.”
The new community room will allow staff and community partners to host educational classes and training for parents, with space for at least 50 people. Szorcsik said this will make it easier for families to have one-stop-shop access to their services.
CAHSC will have an open house for the new community room, with a special dedication, on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Anyone can attend the open house, and you can learn more about the event by clicking here.
