Monday, Jan. 19 is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday, and for the 39th consecutive year St. Petersburg’s celebratory parade will be one of the largest in the nation.

Thousands turn out to cheer floats, marching bands, service organizations and local icons of culture and government.

Bands from Tuskegee University and Alabama A&M will march; there will be music, dance and spectacle. The parade will also include a special appearance by the Wendell Scott Foundation, showcasing a historic Wendell Scott race car honoring the legacy of the first winning African American NASCAR driver and team owner.

The St. Pete MLK Power Of A Dream Parade marches east to west on 1st Avenue S., starting at 11 a.m. Some SunRunner stops will be moved to Central Avenue for the duration of the parade, which begins at 3rd Avenue S. and winds down at Tropicana Field.

Organizers expect as many as 100,000 spectators along the parade route.
