CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (WITN) – A man shot and killed earlier this week by Camp Lejeune security officers was a Jacksonville police officer, according to multiple sources.
The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon near Tarawa Terrace Elementary School on the base.
Sources say Officer Philip Chiorino was killed in the officer-involved shooting.
Online records say the 31-year-old Chiorino lived on Tarawa Terrace, a couple of blocks from the school.
According to a social media post from the police department, Chiorino joined Jacksonville police in August of 2024.
Sources say he was a former Marine firearms instructor who served a couple of tours in Afghanistan.
Camp Lejeune and NCIS have so far released very little information about the deadly shooting.
“Any loss of a member of the department hurts,” said Jacksonville Police Chief Jarad Phelps, while on the phone with WITN.
Chiorino is in a JPD social media video from last fall where he said he was a School Resource Officer at Jacksonville Commons Elementary School and was excited for a great year.
The department said it cannot comment further because the investigation is outside its jurisdiction.
