To the editor:

I am writing this in no way to impart judgment on anyone… however I am concerned in the casual way DUI has been treated with our elected representatives.

Take for example the mayor of Naples and now recently a Cape Coral Council member. There has been this lack of accountability of their mistake/misjudgment. Comments on social media have been made stating “they were arrested while not working… their personal lives have nothing to do with their work responsibilities.”

Well, use that same ideology if an RN was charged on “their off time.” An RN can lose their nursing license for that. The RN has to report the arrest to the Florida Nursing Board and wait for them to decide the punishment. If it is a second infraction, most likely the RN will lose her license to practice nursing!

So what’s the difference? We tend to be a society that has double standards for everything!

The above referenced elected officials should have both took a leave of absence, to not only reflect on their lapse of judgment but to seek help if they have an issue with alcohol!

We are also a forgiving society if the right course of action is properly taken.
