Friday was a beautiful day to be out on the racetrack at Cape Coral BMX as the city hosted the Sunshine State Nationals and UCI World Qualifier.The venue was jam-packed with racers, vendors, and spectators as the International Qualifier kicked off.BMX lovers from across the country gathered as they watched riders compete to represent Team USA in the World Championships.While for many, this was their first time seeing this Top 10-ranked racetrack in the country, a few participating locals are very familiar with their surroundings.BMX Racer Brandon Unger said, “I feel like they have a really good chance because it’s our home track and it’s just a lot easier because they know the track and they know how to ride it.”BMX rider/coach/business owner Will Grant said, “These kids are riding their bike as much as possible and staying focused on that one goal and using every day, every practice session to find how they can become better riders mentally and physically.”While the international qualifier took place on Friday, the national competition will continue throughout the rest of this weekend.Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter said, “We hope everyone will enjoy coming here, and I wish all the participants all the luck in the world.”DOWNLOAD the free Gulf Coast News app for your latest news and alerts on breaking news, weather, sports, entertainment, and more on your phone or tablet.
