Sunrise-based GL Homes has submitted plans for a single-family housing development in Miami-Dade County.

The Calusa community would comprise 540 single-family residences, with floorplans spanning 1,911 to 4,401 square feet. The expansive community would feature a host of communal amenities, such as tennis and pickleball courts, a swimming pool, and a fitness center.

The community would also have a nature aspect, with 12 lakes and a 6,400-square-foot rookery for tri-colored herons and other native birds. This is a key aspect of the project; local residents have voiced their concerns regarding overdevelopment and its effect on Florida’s wildlife.

As noted, GL Homes is the developer. It has partnered with the Bacardi family on the project. GL Homes has started the new year strong, having recently purchased 192 acres in Palm Beach County’s Westlake for development.

In 2021, GL Homes secured approval for the Calusa project, but that was later overturned by a lawsuit. To move forward, the developer must now secure a rezoning approval that would redesignate the 169.3-acre site from “parks and recreation” to “low density residential.”

If approved, the 540-unit community would replace the now-shuttered Calusa Country Club golf course at 9400 S.W. 130th Ave., plus 9800 and 9810 East Calusa Club Drive, Miami, Florida, 33186, in Miami-Dade County.
