Arizona has spent more days in the cone of uncertainty than Florida this year, no immediate threats to Tallahassee, Thomasville and Valdosta

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The 2025 hurricane season has another month and a half left before we can breathe a sigh of relief.

The 2023 and 2024 hurricane seasons were brutal with Idalia, Debby, Helene and Milton. So far in 2025, tropical storms and hurricanes have stayed away from Florida. The state spent two days in a forecast cone issued by the National Hurricane Center for a tropical disturbance that would later be named Imelda. Georgia was also in the cone of uncertainty for two days ahead of Imelda.

The “I”-named hurricane ended up being pulled away from land due to the strength and size of Hurricane Humberto to its east.

A phenomenon known as the Fujiwhara effect led to the two storms trying to rotate around each other. Rather than a true 360 rotation, Humberto had just enough force from the Fujiwhara to pull Imelda right, avoiding any landfall from the southeastern United States.

Due to a shift in the track, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina no longer needed to be in the cone of uncertainty, and no threat was expected to the states.

While the Atlantic has been below average through 72% of the 2025 season, the Pacific Basin has been quite active.

The Pacific has seen 17 named storms and 9 hurricanes, compared to the 11 named storms and 4 hurricanes in the Atlantic.

Since the Pacific has been more active, the southwest coast has been more prone to a landfalling tropical cyclone. This has led to Arizona falling in a forecast cone of uncertainty for a total of three days this season. The cones were leading up to Lorena and Priscilla.

Some other states in the desert southwest include New Mexico, which was in the cone of uncertainty for two days, and California spent one day in a cone.

North Carolina and South Carolina have spent the most amount of days in a forecast cone issued by the NHC, totaling five days during the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.

The first three days were spent in the cone ahead of Tropical Storm Chantal. The last two were ahead of Imelda for its eventual turn away from the southeast U.S.

Hurricane season officially ends on November 30. Until then, it is essential to stay informed about the latest weather updates and changes in the tropics.
