CAPE CORAL – Cape Coral is seeing a significant drop in crime, and city leaders are crediting years of planning and smart policing for the positive change.

New data reveals a 28% decrease in overall crime during the first half of last year, a promising trend for the city’s future.

The Cape Coral Police Department reports declines in nearly every major crime category, including theft, robbery and narcotics cases. Notably, there were zero homicides reported in the first half of the year. Chief Anthony Sizemore said, “Our strategic planning is working from increasing staffing and redistricting to intelligence-led initiatives and new technology. We’re seeing the results.”

Mayor John Gunter highlighted the city’s investment in public safety, noting that $103 million of the $157 million collected in property taxes goes towards this effort. “Our goal is to be the safest city in the state of Florida,” said Gunter.

Since 2017, Cape Coral has added about 85 officers, bringing the total to more than 300 sworn members serving the community. This increase in officers, along with new technology and strong partnerships, is helping to keep the rapidly growing city safe.

For potential new residents like Rick Cousino, these numbers are reassuring. “I come from a really small town Mid Michigan and there’s zero crime rate. I mean, it’s really laid back. So I guess I didn’t even really think you know how the crime rate is here but it’s good to know that it is getting better,” said Cousino.

Police emphasize that focused patrols, intelligence-led initiatives and community partnerships are crucial in targeting repeat offenders and preventing crime. They are committed to continuing these efforts to keep crime on a downward trend.
