Florida Senate advances E-Verify expansion for employers

  • January 22, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) – A Senate committee approved Wednesday an expansion of the state’s E-Verify law as part of a larger Department of Commerce bill targeting employers who hire people living in the country illegally.

The bill would require companies to keep E-Verify records.

If the Commerce Department finds a business is not complying with the law, it would have a 30-day grace period before fines could be imposed.

Florida politics:

The Senate bill does not go as far as the legislation the House passed last week, which would require all private employers to use E-Verify.
