FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — Fort Pierce officials are warning residents after the Fort Pierce Animal Adoption Center confirmed 11 cases of Canine Parvovirus, a sharp increase that has prompted an urgent call for prevention and vigilance among dog owners.
Parvo is a highly contagious and potentially deadly virus, especially for unvaccinated dogs and puppies. It spreads through infected feces or contaminated surfaces such as grass, sidewalks, shoes, and hands, and can persist in the environment for extended periods.

The City provided examples of how residents can help protect their pets:
Ensure dogs are fully vaccinated. Puppies should begin their vaccine series early and complete all recommended boosters.Keep unvaccinated dogs and puppies at home. Avoid dog parks, boarding facilities, and other public areas until vaccinations are complete.Disinfect with bleach if a pet has been sick or there is concern about possible exposure, as bleach is one of the only household products proven to eliminate the virus.Watch for symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea (especially bloody), loss of appetite, weakness, and dehydration.Seek veterinary care immediately if symptoms appear—early treatment can save lives.Comment with Bubbles
