An 8-year-old was shot at a Casselberry apartment complex Sunday, and police said in a news release it appears that an adult living in the complex was the intended target before the child was struck by a ricocheted bullet.

The Casselberry Police Department and Seminole County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Regency Oaks Apartments on Monarch Circle in response to a reported shooting. A boy who had been shot in the upper leg while inside his apartment was found at the scene, according to a Monday news release from Casselberry police.

Police said the child was taken to the hospital and has since been released. The shooting was apparently an isolated incident among people who may know each other.

The release also notes an adult man with a gunshot wound was later dropped off at an Orange County Centra Care location. Casselberry police can’t yet confirm if the man was directly related to the apartment shooting but are following up. The man isn’t cooperating with police.

The investigation is ongoing and remains a priority for Casselberry police, the release said.
