City of Tampa says part of the Picnic Island Park fishing pier collapsed Saturday night while it was still open to the public.

TAMPA, Fla. — A section of the Picnic Island fishing pier collapsed Saturday night. The city of Tampa told 10 Tampa Bay News that the pier was open at the time when the segment between two pylons fell into the water. The pier is located at Picnic Island Park in the Port Tampa neighborhood.

Fortunately, no one was hurt or trapped on the pier after the collapse. City officials say the cause is still unclear, though initial observations suggest some erosion may have contributed.

A city inspector is scheduled to assess the pier later this week.

When asked about routine inspections, the city said the pier is checked monthly by city crews.

The pier was originally built between 1957 and 1960.
