So you may be here because, like many others, you suddenly realized: oh shoot… Valentine’s Day is coming up. Whether you’re trying to impress your partner with something thoughtful, dodge the classic candle-lit white tablecloth dinner, or broke into a light sweat after opening OpenTable and realizing a “nice” reservation now means eating at 10:30pm… no judgment.
Around here, we’re big fans of doing things a little differently.
The real beauty of Valentine’s Day this year? It falls on a Saturday. While some see that as a full day of pressure, we see it as an opportunity. More time to celebrate, get creative, and avoid the most predictable (and crowded) Valentine’s spots.
Here are a few unconventional ways to make the day feel special without forcing it.
1. For the Strawberry Enthusiast
Lucky you, it’s officially strawberry season. Take a mini day trip and drive about 40 minutes from Tampa to Fancy Farms in Lakeland, open Saturdays from 10am–5pm. Pick your own strawberries, grab lunch (yes, even a Cuban), and check out their full dessert menu.
Want to earn major brownie points? Skip dessert there and pick a strawberry-themed recipe to make together at home later. Effort is hot. We don’t make the rules.
2. Still Want a Good Dinner (Just Not a Fancy One)?
Enter Chanko, a homestyle Japanese restaurant in Tampa serving Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, Japanese curry, katsu, and more. Think cozy Japanese diner with the right vibes.
After dinner, head a few minutes up the road for something sweet at either Height’s Drive-Thru or Bo’s Ice Cream, a Tampa institution since 1954. Finish the night at Lowry Parcade with pinball and vintage arcade games. A little friendly competition never hurts.

3. For the Movie Buffs
Whether you’re with your partner or grabbing your girls, Armature Works is hosting a movie night on the lawn showing Crazy, Stupid, Love from 7–9pm. Grab snacks inside, bring a blanket, and cuddle up under the stars.
4. For the Party-Animal Couple
What’s better than one holiday? Two on the same day. The Gasparilla Knight Parade kicks off at 7pm on February 14 in Ybor City this year. Expect beads, pirates, and full chaotic fun.
Grab dinner or drinks beforehand at Flor Fina, Barterhouse, or Bernini, depending on your vibe. Embrace the chaos and see where the night takes you.
5. For the Couple That Loves a Breakfast Date
Our non-traditional breakfast vote goes to LPCX Café, open 8am–3pm. Sit outside in their vibey courtyard and you’ll forget you’re even in Tampa. Order all the Colombian goodies, from pandebono to arepas especiales.
After breakfast, take a romantic walk along the Hillsborough River at Lowry Park and enjoy the slower pace.
6. For the Lobster Lovers
If lobster rolls and waterfront views are your love language, this one’s for you. Leon’s Lobstah Shack, tucked into Ballast Point Park, is one of Tampa’s best-kept secrets. Once a concession stand, now a go-to for lobster rolls, seafood baskets, and unbeatable bay views. They’re open from 11am–8pm, making it an easy daytime or sunset stop.
7. For the Theater-Goers
The Broadway production & Juliet, written by an Emmy-winning writer from Schitt’s Creek, runs February 10–15 at the Straz Center. On the 14th, catch the 2pm matinee, then stroll the Riverwalk and grab a drink or snack at Armature Works or Ulele to end the night.
8. In Case Your Jokes Aren’t Cutting It
Let your partner laugh at someone else’s jokes for the night. St. Pete Stand Up is hosting a Tampa Bay Area-wide night of standup comedy with six shows throughout the region.
Valentine’s Day doesn’t need to be overdone or expensive to be meaningful. The best plans are usually the ones that feel thoughtful and personal. Whether you go all out or keep it simple, choose something that fits you and your relationship. Sometimes, that’s what makes it memorable.
