CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A student protest against federal immigration policies at Mariner High School turned chaotic Thursday, as dozens of students fled campus grounds.

The demonstration, centered on President Trump’s immigration enforcement policies, began as a planned walkout but quickly disrupted normal school operations. Reports from the scene indicated a disorganized environment as students left the property, raising concerns regarding student accountability and safety.

In a statement provided to Florida’s Voice, the School District of Lee County emphasized that while students have a right to free expression, the district’s priority remains maintaining an orderly educational environment.

“Our schools exist for one primary purpose: education,” the district stated. “Behaviors that interfere with instruction or the safety of others will not be tolerated. Any student who violates district standards will be disciplined in accordance with the Code of Conduct.”

District officials noted that the responsibility of the school system is to ensure that campuses remain “orderly, respectful, and free of disruption.” While the district recognized the constitutional rights of students to voice their opinions on the administration’s immigration policies, they made clear that those rights do not extend to creating safety hazards or abandoning campus without authorization.

The “fleeing” of students from the Mariner High raised particular alarm for local parents and administrators, as the district’s code of conduct strictly governs “leaving campus without permission” and “disruption of educational process.”

The incident at Mariner High follows similar reports of “ICE walkouts” being organized across several Florida districts, including recent reports of outside organizations attempting to influence student behavior in nearby counties.

Lee County officials did not specify the exact number of students involved in the walkout or the number of students who left the property, but they confirmed that disciplinary measures will follow for those who violated school policies.

The district concluded its statement by reiterating its commitment to a focused learning environment: “The School District of Lee County remains focused on students’ safety, teaching, and learning.”
