NORTH FORT MYERS – Illegal arcades are causing a stir across Southwest Florida, with bogus slot machines posing a significant risk to those who use them.
Alana Zimmer, executive director of the Florida Gaming Control Commission, said, “The citizens of Florida approved an initiative, I believe it was in 2018, that says that there can’t be any expanded gaming past that date, so we cannot increase it. And as a result, we’ve had a lot more illegal gambling places popping up.”
These illegal spots are linked to increased crime and often target vulnerable individuals like the elderly. “There’s increased crime where these are located. There’s more risk to the people who live around the areas. You know, they prey on people,” said a source.
The only legal slot machine casino in Southwest Florida is the Seminole Casino in Immokalee. Zimmer said, “Our local Floridians aren’t always aware if it’s legal or not, so we are trying to make it more aware, increase awareness for them.”
State lawmakers are also taking action with House Bill 189, proposing harsher penalties for illegal gambling operations.
