Please keep the Galleria!

The mall in Fort Lauderdale is the only upscale shopping center in our area that also has great restaurants.

The area (East Sunrise Boulevard near the Intracoastal Waterway) does not need more condos or apartments. But we do need upscale shops, places to meet, eat and socialize.

You can get upscale shops, kiosks and unique stores in there. The Galleria is an institution and it makes that area beautiful. Leave it alone and go somewhere else!

It would be a tragedy to tear it down! Please keep the Galleria for shoppers, restaurant patrons and all the people who work there.

Fearing ‘the rule of many’

Those protesting a “king” (as in President Trump) should study “On Politics and Ethics” by the medieval philosopher St. Thomas Aquinas, 1225-1274 (as translated by Paul E. Sigmund of Princeton).

In Chapter 5: “Tyranny is more likely to develop from the rule of many than of one person.  Therefore, monarchy is preferable. The dangers that arise from government by the many are more to be avoided than those that result from monarchy.”

Read the whole chapter before you jump to conclusions.

The wrong side of truth, too

Letters such as the one in the Oct. 19 Sun Sentinel (“The wrong side of history,” by Mark Goldstein of Boca Raton) serve as a stark reminder that “alternative facts” remain alive and well.

Jewish, in name only

One of the strongest advocates of Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda is Homeland Security adviser Stephen Miller. I had to verify that he is Jewish. His family immigrated from Europe to escape persecution, pogroms and for those unfortunate enough to stay, the Holocaust.

There is no litmus test for being Jewish — only the requirement of a Jewish mother or father according to some branches of Judaism.

I don’t question Miller’s Judaism. But I do question how anyone can be so completely devoid of the values of our religion. Hillel the Elder, the fifth-century sage, was quoted as saying: “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?”

It’s a variation of the Golden Rule. Hillel went on to say, “That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah. The rest is the explanation; go and learn.”

Mr. Miller, please don’t be Jewish in name only. Be guided by Judaism’s core principles.

At FSU, a double standard
Former FSU football coach Willie Taggart is now an assistant coach with the NFL\'s Baltimore Ravens.

Former FSU football coach Willie Taggart is now an assistant coach with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens.

Florida State football fans raise a fair question: How do you fire Willie Taggart after 21 games, yet still keep Mike Norvell after five seasons?

Taggart inherited chaos and never got the time or backing Norvell enjoyed. Yet Norvell’s teams often look undisciplined and unprepared. If accountability is the standard, it should be applied evenly. (Norvell’s overall record is 36-31, and 20-23 in the ACC.)

Norvell earned credit for the 2023 run — but his brightest star, quarterback Jordan Travis, was a Taggart recruit. The momentum has faded and the Seminoles feel further from national relevance.

Fans can handle losses; what they can’t stomach is selective patience, a double standard that rewards one coach and punishes another. If FSU truly values fairness and excellence, it must stop shifting the goalposts and give its fans an honest reckoning.
