A new study examines the safest cities in every state in the country, including in Florida.
The rankings from Safewise “are intended to highlight cities with low per capita crime and ignite conversation and action around how to make all cities and communities safer,” the company said.
In Florida, the analysis found that the safest community is Vero Beach. The Indian River County town, which was once a part of St. Lucie County, has an estimated population of 15,220.
“Everyone wants to feel safe at home,” Safewise wrote. “Whether you’re checking in on your current city or scouting out a new one, we’ve crunched the numbers on crime rates across the country.”
Overall, Florida fared OK in the study. The violent crime rate in the Sunshine State is 3.96 incidents per 1,000 people, which is lower than the national average of 4.43.
Property crime has increased slightly in recent years, rising from 19.4 incidents per 1,000 people in 2024 to 20.29 incidents in this year’s report. That’s lower than the national property crime rate of 22.89.
Although the rate of people who feel safe in Florida have jumped from 47 percent to 55 percent in the span of a year, Safewise reported 49 percent of Floridians remain concerned for their safety daily.
The number one way Florida residents protect their property is with security cameras at 63 percent followed by security systems at 46 percent.
