A 51-year-old woman has been charged with leaving the scene of a hit-and-run that killed a Clearwater father.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Clearwater police say they arrested the driver responsible for the Feb. 4 hit-and-run crash on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard that killed 60-year-old Elbert Gilbert.

Dawn Dunkle, 51, was arrested Friday morning and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

Police say Dunkle was driving the 2024 red Ford Mustang that hit Gilbert while he was in a marked crosswalk. After hitting Gilbert, Dunkle did not call 911 or stop to render aid, according to investigators.

“She fled the scene, but parts of her car were left behind,” the police department wrote in a post.

When investigators located the car a few days later, they said the Mustang had damage consistent with a crash involving a pedestrian.

According to Clearwater police, Dunkle told others she thought she had hit a box or speed bump.

Dunkle was charged with possession of a controlled substance and was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on Friday morning.
