An armed man who was shot and killed by Fort Lauderdale police officers on Saturday has been identified.
Luis Felipe Londono Ospina, 43, of Fort Lauderdale, approached police officers with a gun and was shot while they were responding to a verbal dispute that had no connection to him, according to Police Chief Bill Schultz. Ospina was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Ospina and three officers fired their guns during the “encounter” in the 900 block of Chateau Park Drive, according to police. The police department has not provided further details about what led to the shooting.
The disturbance “was a routine, unrelated verbal dispute with no known connection to Ospina,” Det. Kerry Hagerty said in a news release. “Ospina was not involved in the dispute. There is no ongoing investigation into this disturbance.”
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, as is standard for police shootings.
