The South Georgia State College Hawks improved to 9-8 on the season after winning two games in Jacksonville. SGSC defeated Battle Creek, Michigan’s Kellogg Community College Bruins 3-1 in game one then bested the Florida State College-Jacksonville Manta Rays 6-2.
Against the Bruins, third baseman Jesse Brown (sophomore, Stauton River High School, Virginia) provided most of the offense for SGSC. Brown homered twice – a two-run shot in the first inning and a solo homer in the fifth.
In the first, Danny Vigille-grant (freshman, Tallulah Falls) singled with one out. Brown connected on the first pitch he saw and drove the ball over the left field wall for a 2-0 lead. Brown led off the fifth with a solo home run to left to give the Hawks a 3-1 advantage.
Brown was 3-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Talon Daignault (sophomore, Camden County) was 2-3 with a double.
SGSC used three pitchers against Kellogg. Starter Kason Degrande (sophomore, Pedro Menedez) took the win in four innings of work. He struck out six and walked two while giving up one run. Carson Ward (sophomore, Calvary Christian) got the save – he threw the seventh and didn’t allow a hit, run, or walk. He struck out one.
Against FSCJ, the Hawks scored one in the third and five in the fifth to win their second game of the day.
In the third, Vigille-grant doubled to score Tanner Langley (sophomore, Georgia Southern University) for a 1-0 SGSC lead.
Two innings later, Gavin Hamrick (freshman, River Ridge) led off with a walk then went to third on a single off the bat of Travis Stroud II (sophomore, Indian Hills). Langley singled, scoring Hamrick. Vigille-grant followed with a single to left, driving in Stroud II. After two quick outs, the Hawks went back to work. Bryce Marchman (freshman, Swainsboro) singled to right center, scoring Langley and moving Vigille-grant to third. Marchman went to second on the throw. Nate Thomas (freshman, Mount Vernon Presbyterian) jumped on the first pitch he saw and singled to left, scoring Vigille-grant and Marchman to give the Hawks a 6-0 lead.
The Manta Rays scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and another in the bottom of the seventh. But they couldn’t get any closer than that.
Vigille-grant and Diego Gonzales (freshman, Tallulah Falls) each had two hits. Vigille-grant and Thomas drove in two. Skyler Kokoszka (freshman, St. Augustine) nabbed the win and Hayden Gmerek (sophomore, Monroe Area) picked up the save.
The Hawks are 9-8 on the season and play again this afternoon in Thomasville against the Thomas University JV squad.
