A person was killed after a car crash with a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy late Monday night in Tamarac while the deputy was investigating a reported stolen car.

The car was stolen from Margate and spotted in Tamarac just before midnight, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Tuesday night.

A deputy crashed with a car unrelated to the investigation in the area of West Prospect Road and Northwest 31st Avenue, the news release said. The Sheriff’s Office did not provide further information about what preceded the crash or how it occurred.

A second crash then happened with the suspect’s stolen car, though the Sheriff’s Office did not provide further details about the circumstances of the second crash or who crashed with the suspect.

The deputy, the suspect and the passenger in the unrelated car were taken to the hospital and were expected to recover while the driver of the unrelated car died, BSO said.

The names of the suspect, who has since been arrested, the person who died and the deputies involved had not been released as of Tuesday night.

Multiple Tamarac deputies communicated the direction of travel of the suspect’s gray Jeep Cherokee for several minutes before the first crash, according to radio communications archived by the site Broadcastify.

One of the people injured was bleeding from his head after the crash with the deputy, according to the radio communications. Another car had rolled over onto its side. A K-9 could be heard barking in the background.

Detectives with BSO’s Traffic Homicide detectives and Violent Crimes Units are investigating, as well as the Internal Affairs Unit.
