Flags at the Florida State Capitol and throughout Duval County will fly at half-staff on Friday in honor of Terry Fields, a former state representative and Jacksonville City Council member who passed away earlier this month.
“He will be remembered for his dedication to improving his community,” the memorandum read. It orders that flags remain lowered from sunrise to sunset.
Fields died on Sunday, Feb. 8, at the age of 66 following a brief illness. Friends, family and city officials attended funeral and wake services for Fields in Jacksonville on Thursday.

Fields served on the Jacksonville City Council before representing the state’s 14th District in the Florida House of Representatives in the early 2000s. During that time, the Democrat built a reputation as a leader who worked across political lines and prioritized working families.
In his later years, Fields continued serving the community as a teacher at Duval Charter School at Westside.
