HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — At least one person was killed in a major crash on the Florida Turnpike in Hollywood early Saturday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. along the U.S. 441 corridor, just south of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
Traffic cameras captured the moments after the collision, showing a white Dodge pickup truck with its entire front end crushed. A short distance away, a box truck could be seen across the center divider.
A massive wrecker was called to remove the damaged vehicles as several state troopers responded to the scene.
Traffic was gridlocked for miles in both directions, at one point forcing officials to shut down all lanes. Vehicles were later seen slowly inching along as crews worked to reopen the highway.
Authorities spent hours clearing debris scattered across both sides of the roadway.
FHP officials have not yet released the victim’s age, gender or identity. They have also not confirmed what led to the collision.
