PALM BEACH- Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) will be renamed Donald J. Trump International Airport after the Florida Legislature approved the measure.

The proposal now awaits the signature of Ron DeSantis and is expected to take effect July 1, 2026.

The vote passed along strict party lines, allocating $5.5 million for signage, branding, and system updates.

The decision places PBI alongside airports such as John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), which are named after former U.S. presidents.

Florida Lawmakers Approve Trump Airport Renaming

In November 2025, Florida State Representative Meg Weinberger introduced legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport after Donald Trump. In a public statement, she said:

“President Trump is the most consequential president of our lifetime and a resident of Palm Beach County, which makes it only fitting to honor him, like many other presidents before him, by naming our airport Donald J. Trump International.”

Weinberger also posted on X that “America’s greatest President deserves an airport that bears his name,” describing the proposal as a tribute to his leadership and hometown roots.

The Florida House approved the bill in an 81 to 30 vote. The Senate followed with a 25 to 11 vote. Both chambers voted strictly along partisan lines. The legislation now requires Governor DeSantis’ approval to become law.

According to OMAAT, given the Republican majority in the legislature, the proposal was widely expected to pass.

If signed, the renaming will take effect July 1, 2026. The state allocated approximately $5.5 million for implementation. Funding will cover:

Terminal and roadway signage replacement

Digital system modifications

This proposal is not Weinberger’s first initiative honoring Trump. In February 2025, she co-sponsored HB 987 to rename a four mile stretch of Southern Boulevard near Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach County after Trump.

Trump has also filed several applications with the US Patent and Trademark Office covering at least three name variations that airports could adopt, including the name specified in the Palm Beach legislation.

There have been public discussions about renaming Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) after Trump, though no formal legislative action has been approved in that case.

Airports Named After US Presidents

More than ten commercial airports in the United States are named after former presidents. Examples include:

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)

Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR)

Clinton National Airport (LIT)

These examples show that naming airports after presidents is an established practice in the United States.

Debate Over Naming Airports After Politicians

The renaming has renewed debate over whether airports should carry political names. Some argue airports should retain geographic identifiers tied to the cities they serve. Others support honoring presidents through major public infrastructure.

Critics note that naming airports after contemporary or recently active politicians can create division.

Supporters point to precedent and historical recognition. Similar debates occurred when Las Vegas’ main airport was renamed after Harry Reid.

Questions have also emerged about whether Palm Beach International Airport will be the only airport named after Trump, given prior public interest in other facilities.
