FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — Two pedestrians were reportedly struck hours apart on U.S. 1 in Fort Pierce on Sunday, leaving one dead and another critical.
The first crash happened around 7 p.m. on the 2100 block of U.S. Highway 1 near Virginia Avenue, according to the Fort Pierce Police Department.
Crash investigators say a man driving an Infiniti was heading northbound on the highway when another man attempted to cross the highway from west to east outside of the designated crosswalk.
The pedestrian was subsequently struck by the vehicle, and officers say the driver cooperated and remained at the scene. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

Just hours later, shortly after 11 p.m., officers responded to a second vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash at the intersection of South U.S. Highway 1 and Lakefront Boulevard.
In this case, police say a woman was driving a Volkswagen sedan southbound on the highway when she struck a woman in a wheelchair crossing westbound outside of the marked crosswalk.
Again, the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated. The pedestrian later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
