After a five-month search, Berkeley Preparatory School, a private pre-K through 12th grade college prep school in Tampa, has named Augustine “Gus” Whyte as its next head of school.

Whyte, who graduated from Berkeley Prep in 1999, will be the seventh leader of the school and will start in July.

Whyte is the director of the school’s division for grades nine through 12. He started his career as a teacher before working in several school administration positions in Louisiana, Georgia and Connecticut.

“Gus is a visible leader who believes in developing strong relationships with faculty and staff, students, parents and alumni,” board of trustees chairperson Fraser MacKechnie said in an announcement. “He strongly believes in purposeful program innovation and has helped launch programs at his prior school that were firsts in their region.”

In a video for the school, Whyte said he looked forward to taking on the head role at the school he came from.

“One of the things I love and admire about Berkeley is that it has stayed true to its mission since its founding,” he said. “And my favorite part of that mission is the section that says, ‘So that students may eventually attain their highest potential as human beings.’ … That’s what we’re really here to do, to put people in the world who make a positive difference.”
