FORT MYERS – Online threats are on the rise, and federal officials are taking them seriously.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Matt Fodor and U.S. Attorney Greg Kehoe, who oversee Southwest Florida, discussed the growing concern.

Kehoe emphasized the seriousness of online threats, saying, “We take you at your word. If you threaten to harm another human being, then you’re in the Middle District of Florida, you’re going to be arrested.”

Fodor acknowledged the challenges in tracking these threats due to apps that can hide users’ locations. However, he assured that traditional investigative techniques are effective, even if they take longer.

Despite the spike in online threats, FBI statistics show Southwest Florida remains a safe place to live. Fodor mentioned the importance of partnerships with local law enforcement, saying, “We have great relationship with Collier County, Lee County, all the way up and down the West Coast.”

Task forces focusing on terrorism, violent crime and cyber threats are actively working in the area to ensure safety.
