GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The FIU baseball program fell to #10 Florida, 17-11, Tuesday evening at Condron Family Ballpark in the opening game of a two-game midweek series.

After building a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning, FIU (6-3) was unable to slow the Gators’ offense, as Florida erupted for seven runs in the fourth and seven more in the fifth.

In the first meeting between the two programs since 1998, FIU struck early with two runs in the opening frame. A pair of singles from Samuel Fischer and Andrew Ildefonso opened the game with singles while Cooper Rasmussen drew a walk to load the bases. A throwing error by the Gators first baseman pushed two runs across for the 2-0 lead.

Florida evened the game in the third inning, but the Panthers answered in the fourth. Rasmussen delivered an sacrifice fly, followed by a deep RBI double to right-center by Fischer to give FIU a 4-2 advantage. The Gators responded with their decisive 14-run surge across the fourth and fifth innings to take a 16-4 lead.

FIU continued to battle offensively, plating four runs in the sixth. Ildefonso laced a two-run double to left-center, and Boston Doeschot followed with a two-run single to right field to trim the deficit to 16-8. After Florida added a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly, the Panthers scored three in the ninth behind a two-run double from Caden Sammler and an RBI single from Enrique Alvarez Jr. to account for the 17-11 final.

On the mound, Quin McManmon made his first start of the season, striking out four over 2.1 innings while allowing two earned runs. Enrique Sierra (2-1) took the loss after surrendering five runs in 1.1 innings. Cooper Foster, Tyler Mecchella and Brennan Confreda also saw relief action. Rene Lastres allowed one run over 1.2 innings, while Taggert Cameron worked 1.1 scoreless frames.

Offensively, FIU outhit Florida 16-14, highlighted by Fischer’s three-hit performance. The junior has now tallied 12 hits over his last five games and added an RBI double Tuesday night. Hector Candelas and Ildefonso each recorded two hits, while Alvarez Jr. and Sammler produced multi-hit efforts off the bench. Mario Trivella added a double in the contest.
