What do a lauded musician, renowned surfers and a marine biologist have in common? They care about our environment.
After years of hearing about ocean “garbage patches,” marine scientist Marcus Eriksen built a crew of citizen scientists to help him study the sea. The group includes renowned surfers Keith and Dan Malloy, musician Jack Johnson, spearfisher Kimi Werner and bodysurfer Mark Cunningham.
Key Biscayne audiences will be able to experience this sparkling underwater cinematography, an original score by Johnson and shipmate Simon Beins and live-action footage of the crew’s research journey.
This month’s upcoming Citizen Scientist Project Lunch & Learn will feature a free screening of “The Smog of the Sea,” the film that came about from this eco-friendly exploratory adventure. The film’s run time is 30 minutes.
The Lunch & Learn, which is catered by Milanezza, will take place at noon, on Feb. 26, at the Key Biscayne Community Center’s Island Room. It is free for KBCC Members and $10 for Non-Members.
The Key Biscayne Community Foundation created the Citizen Science Program to educate the public with meaningful community programming.
The Citizen Science Project’s mission is to protect the natural resources on Key Biscayne and Virginia Key, educate the public about environmental issues, and provide hands-on opportunities to protect local ecosystems.
RSVP is required! Visit the KBCC front desk or call (305) 365-8900 to register or for questions.
