Market District businesses hit hard as construction begins new phase

  • February 27, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A new phase in construction is starting next week for Maclay Boulevard. But as work on a park continues, it means new road closures and headaches for nearby businesses trying to navigate it all.

Maclay Boulevard has already been closed for months. Starting Monday, crews will work on the roundabout where that road meets Maclay Commerce Drive.

That work will force Maclay Commerce Drive to be closed for six weeks.

The city said that it moved up this phase at the request of the Market District Association so that it could be completed sooner.

President of the association, Serena Moyle, works at nearby boutique ‘Hearth and Soul.’ She said the city has been responsive to their concerns, but is hoping for more cooperation going forward.

More Tallahassee news:

“Initially, when this was presented to us, it was going to be a 90-day construction of the roundabout, and the merchants have already been impacted since September with all these road closures. Those are unintended consequences that the city didn’t really realize was impacting everybody over here on Market District,” Moyle said.

Moyle said her business and others have seen a noticeable downtick of business since construction began.

Nearby, Gordo’s owner Eddie Agramonte said the city could have done better.

“This happened over Christmas time, and now it’s about to happen over Spring- when the weather is nice and people want to come and sit outside. And they’re going to close me down again, I’m sorry, it’s just, this is very poorly planned,” Agramonte said.

Moyle said customers are choosing to avoid the detours altogether.

“When you have 15 minute waits, 30 minute commutes that normally took you 5 and 10 minutes when you relied on Maclay Boulevard. And now that’s shut down… people are like, I’m frustrated. I’m not coming,” she said.

Moyle hopes the city will continue to work with businesses to create better signage to ease the burden on customers trying to navigate the area.

The hope is to have Maclay Boulevard open by late summer and customer traffic to open back up soon after.
