A woman was arrested with more than 33 pounds of marijuana in her luggage at Miami International Airport before she could board a flight to the Dominican Republic, authorities said.

Eliana Y. Acosta, 30, was arrested Thursday at MIA on a cannabis trafficking charge, an arrest report said.

According to the report, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers were conducting inspections at MIA due to the “high trend of narcotics being smuggled outbound from the United States.”

Acosta’s checked bag was inspected and found to contain 28 vacuum-sealed packages with a green leafy substance inside, the report said.

The substance tested positive for marijuana and weighed around 15.26 kilograms, or 33.64 pounds.

Acosta was stopped at the jet bridge before she could board a flight to Santo Domingo and acknowledged the luggage was hers, the report said.

The report said Acosta is a citizen of the Dominican Republic but lives in McAdoo, Pennsylvania.

She was booked into jail and expected to appear before a bond court judge on Friday.

The incident is just the latest of several recent drug trafficking arrests at MIA that includes an arrest earlier this week of a woman from California.
