The Gist

Tampa Airport has issued a new statement following its announcement that it was banning pajamas.

A spokesperson clarified that the original post was, in fact, a joke.

“Obviously this is all in fun, and we encourage our travelers to be comfortable.”

There are two types of people in this world: people who turn up to the airport with a full face of makeup and a chic business casual look, and people who rock up to departures in the comfiest, coziest clothes they can find. Usually, that means full-on PJs. Now, pajamas are something of a controversial travel outfit formula—but there’s no denying that they are popular. In fact, they are so popular that Tampa Airport recently announced they were banning travelers from wearing them to their airport. Now, after the initial statement generated a whole lot of conversation and confusion, the airport clarified that apparently, it was all one big joke.

“Today’s post about ‘banning’ pajamas was another playful nod to day-of-travel fashion debates,” the airport told The Independent. “We encourage our passengers to travel comfortably and appreciate our loyal followers who enjoy the online humor.”

Beau Zimmer, an airport spokesperson, also told the Associated Press that the original post was simply part of the airport’s long-standing joke-y brand voice on social media. “Our regular social media followers just eat this stuff up,” Zimmer said. “But obviously this is all in fun, and we encourage our travelers to be comfortable.”

In other words, yes, you can still wear your PJs when traveling to Tampa.

In hindsight, the original post is pretty funny. In the February 26 social media post, Tampa Airport wrote, “After successfully banning Crocs and giving everyone the amazing opportunity to experience the world’s first Crocs-free airport, it’s time to take on an even larger crisis. Pajamas. At. The. Airport. In the middle of the day.”

They added, “The madness stops today. The movement starts now.”
