LAS VEGAS – The No. 3 Florida men’s golf team is tied for third at 5-under through the opening round at the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Sunday.
A premier field consisting of nine top-25 and the top-4 ranked schools this week at Southern Highlands Golf Club, Florida opened with team round of 283 (-5) and are tied with Washington in third. No. 1 Virginia (-11) leads the tournament followed by Auburn (-6) after 18-holes. Additionally, all 15 teams competing are ranked inside the top-46.
In his sixth round this spring, Jack Turner logged his fourth in the 60s (69-69-64) with a 4-under 68 and is tied for fourth. After back-to-back bogeys on holes nine and ten, the junior made three straight birdies between 11-13 and added his final and sixth of the round on the par4 16th. Turner is two shots back of leader Paul Chang (-6) of Virginia.
The second to shoot under par and in the lineup for the third straight event, Parker Sands turned in a round one of 2-under 70 and is tied for 14th. It was the sophomore’s fourth round in the red in his last five as he only made one bogey today.
Zack Swanwick regrouped from a pair of double-bogeys on ten and eleven with a 1-under stretch across the final eight holes for an even-par 72. One shot back of him for the final counting score was Matthew Kress with a 73 (+1).
Rounding out the lineup was Noah Kent shooting a 74 (+2) as freshman Trevor Gutschewski is competing as an individual this week carded a 76 (+4).
