An announced candidate for Cape Coral City Council was injured after he was struck by a vehicle while biking home from the bank this morning.

Sean Hartman said he was injured after he and a vehicle collided at Del Prado Boulevard and Four Mile Cove Parkway.

He said the accident happened after it looked like the vehicle, which was coming off of Four Mile Cove Parkway and turning right onto Del Prado, had stopped so he moved through going south on Del Prado.

“I passed through. He simultaneously saw an opening to turn; he turned and struck me,” Hartman said. “I wasn’t horribly injured. My hip and elbows were scrapped and bruised. A literal pain in my butt.”

Hartman, who was taken to the HCA Cape Coral ER by ambulance, said he may need a cane for a few days.

The driver was very nice and respectful, he said, adding that, as a regular biker, he is sharing the incident as a precautionary tale.

There are two things he wanted to emphasize.

One, he urges drivers to stay vigilant.

“Drivers, pay attention before you turn on the crosswalk, so you don’t hit anyone,” Hartman said.

The other is for bikers to wear helmets.

“I was not wearing a helmet. Thank God I didn’t have a head injury,” he said. “It’s a real safety issue for everyone involved. We all have a responsibility to keep each other safe.”

Hartman said he pretty much bikes everywhere he goes as the bike routes are interconnected with a wider network of routes.

“I, like, practice what I preach and bike around the city,” he said.
