Wynwood Street Park becomes Sunday car-free space

The Wynwood Business Improvement District (BID) has launched Wynwood Street Park, a car-free community gathering space.

The community initiative has transformed the block of Northwest Third Avenue between Northwest 26th and 27th streets into a shared public space in the heart of Wynwood every Sunday throughout this month.

Wynwood Street Park features shade tents, chairs and tables, and board games. Participants are encouraged to bring their own activities, such as books, picnic supplies, musical instruments, sports equipment, or anything else that helps them enjoy the space, said William Kelley, the BID’s executive director.

Select Sundays may include acoustic musicians or artists painting live, but the emphasis remains intentionally minimal, he said. The goal is to offer a relaxed place to slow down, connect with neighbors, and spend time outdoors without the feeling of a street fair.

“We are testing what it means to be public space,” Mr. Kelley said. “Wynwood has long been defined by its energy and creativity, but like many former industrial neighborhoods, it wasn’t built with much room to simply unwind. Wynwood Street Park is about making the district more hospitable and welcoming so people can sit, play, and linger.”

Supported by the Miami Parking Authority and Goldman Properties, the BID will use the March dates to evaluate whether a recurring car-free block can become a lasting community feature in Wynwood.

“We’ll learn what works, what the community responds to, and whether this model creates real value for the neighborhood,” Mr. Kelley added. “If it resonates, it could become a regular part of life in Wynwood.”
