PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — The Treasure Coast is set to open its first new hospital in more than a decade.

The Florida Coast Medical Center is preparing to open its doors on Tuesday, September 9th. The $200 million project is located near Florida’s Turnpike and Becker Road, in one of the fastest-growing areas in the country.

Florida Coast Medical Center will provide comprehensive emergency and outpatient care and is designed to serve residents in both St. Lucie and Martin counties. The 185,000-square-foot facility is owned by Tenet Healthcare and is an affiliate of the Palm Beach Health Network.

The hospital’s CEO, Tyler Sherrill, emphasized the project’s community focus. “It’s not just one single company that drives the hospital,” he said. “It’s the community that ultimately carries it forward and will benefit from it in the future.”

The facility is equipped with new technology, including operating rooms with special green lighting to help surgeons fight fatigue. The hospital’s patient rooms are also designed with safety in mind, featuring phone chargers built into the beds to prevent patients from falling while trying to reach their devices.

Sherrill described the new hospital as a “new era of healthcare for the Treasure Coast,” citing its focus on advanced technology, including robotics and advanced cardiac care.

The new outpatient wing will host specialists from around the area for unique needs. The hospital is part of a larger, 26.5-acre campus that will include three planned buildings. The first medical office building is now complete, with plans to expand further to meet the growing demand for healthcare in the region.
